Long Term Post-Fire Vegetation Dynamics in North-East Mediterranean Ecosystems. The Case of Mount Athos Greece

چکیده

Fire is an ecological and disturbance factor with a significant historical role in shaping the landscape of fire-prone environments. Despite large amount literature regarding post-fire vegetation dynamics, north-east Mediterranean region rather underrepresented literature. Studies that refer to early post fire years long term research are scarce. The current study conducted socially geographically isolated peninsula Mount Athos (Holly Mountain) northern Greece, it studies dynamics over period 30 since last fire. Field data were collected 11 event used identify present plant communities area, using TWINSPAN, factors affecting their distribution CART. Four Landsat (TM, ETM, OLI) images employed for calculation NDVI, which was found effective detecting intercommunity variation monitoring. includes four communities, from maquis forest common covering wide altitudinal range. results suggest affects various different way recovery differs significantly. While recover quickly after fire, maintaining composition structure, may need several before reaching pre-fire characteristics. dry climatic conditions area probably reason slow most prone communities. Given climate change expected make even drier region, like this emphasize adopt measures controlling wildfires preventing ecosystem degradation.

Long-Term Satellite Detection of Post-Fire Vegetation Trends in Boreal Forests of China

This paper describes the long-term effects on vegetation following the catastrophic fire in 1987 on the northern Great Xing’an Mountain by analyzing the AVHRR GIMMS 15-day composite normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) dataset. Both temporal and spatial characteristics were analyzed for natural regeneration and tree planting scenarios from 1984 to 2006. Regressing post-fire NDVI values...

The Long-Term Effects of Wildfire and Post-Fire Vegetation on Sierra Nevada Forest Soils

This paper compares carbon (C) and nutrient contents in soils (Alfisols derived from andesite), forest floor and vegetation in a former fire (1960) and an adjacent forest in the Sagehen Watershed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Soils from the former fire (now occupied predominantly by Ceanothus velutinus, a nitrogen-fixing shrub) had significantly lower contents of extractable SO4...

Long-term studies of vegetation dynamics.

By integrating a wide range of experimental, comparative, and theoretical approaches, ecologists are starting to gain a detailed understanding of the long-term dynamics of vegetation. We explore how patterns of variation in demographic traits among species have provided insight into the processes that structure plant communities. We find a common set of mechanisms, derived from ecological and e...
